The Usury Suspects - Kansas Debt collector fined for collecting illegal payday loans
The government of New York declared that short term - high interest loans, commonly known as "payday loans" are destructive to low income communities. So, they outlawed them. However, just because they are illegal in New York, doesn't mean that you can't get one if you live there. In the internet age, you can find just about anything you are looking for online. However, high interest lender need to be wary, just because they give you a loan, doesn't mean they can legally collect it.
National Credit Adjusters, a Hutchinson, Kansas-based debt-collections agency has been sued all over the country for various reasons related to their business practices. Turns out that New York City's Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) revoked
NCA's collections license back in April 2013. The lack of a business didn't seems to dissuade NCA from continuing to call
New Yorkers to recover the illegal debts of their clients. Both sides reached a $1 million settlement and a promise that NCA would stop collecting all debts in New York City.
